Fun week! Warren Bernard and Tom Scioli joined us this past week for some great comics action - we liberated some CGC comic book prisoners (check out the Kirby + Simon Boy Commandoes in Detective Comics), Warren dug into his comics history collection with some pre-1933 (Funnies on Parade) comic books, Stan Lee and Martin Goodman set us straight on Captain America’s creation, and we revisit Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece - MAUS. What a week! Thanks to Warren and Tom for their time and company.
After co-creating the Marvel Universe in the 60s, Jack “the King” Kirby headed to DC Comics. One of his first efforts was this crime comics black-and-white magazine - harkening back to the golden age crime comics of the 50s as well as contemporary black-and-white magazines like Warren published (that’s James Warren, no relation to Warren Bernard).
Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon is an Image Comics staple and fan-favorite here at Cartoonist Kayfabe. But Larsen’s Dragon appeared in Megaton in the 80s. Check out that early appearance here - interesting to see how Larsen developed as a cartoonist as well his most famous creation.
Our 2021 Watchmen read continues - Night Owl and Silk Spectre bust Rorschach out of prison! Is this the most fun issue of Watchmen? I think it’s my favorite. Classic superhero escapades filtered through the talented minds of Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, and John Higgins! Read Moore Comics!
Chester Brown’s Yummy Fur is one of the best comic book series I’ve read. From the surreal journey of Ed the Happy Clown to some of the best autobiographical comics ever produced. Here are the covers of an alternative comics milestone.
Speaking of milestones - Ditko and Lee team-up Marvel’s greatest rogues gallery in a double-sized epic. Spider-Man vs the Sinister Six! Nuff said.
Dan Clowes has made enough great comics that it’s hard to single out the best. But most Clowes’ fans agree Caricature is one of the high-points in Eightball, alt-comics, and literary comics. It makes a great companion piece to Pussey - his other look at cartooning and the people who define themselves by their art.
David Mazzucchelli shows us all how to make comics in Asterios Polyp. The master cartoonist applies every trick, technique, tool, and idea to make this book a great, memorable read. A paper architect and his stillborn twin travel through life looking for elusive answers and interacting with an array of terrific characters. Meditative, beautiful, inventive. This is a special comic by a spectacular talent at the top of his game.
Jack Kirby and Wally Wood made a comic strip about space exploration. If you need more than that, you’ve subscribed to the wrong newsletter.
